A free program on the "Salisbury Iron Mines" will be presented by Bob Schmid at the Herkimer County Historical Society, 406 N. Main St., Herkimer. Schmid is the vice-president of the Salisbury Historical Society and has presented several programs on the area's history. In 1902 William H. Switzer, originally from Little Falls and later, founder of the Superior Furnace Company, formed the Salisbury Steel and Iron Company. He brought about an extension of Little Falls & Dolgeville to Salisbury Center with a short spur to the Irondale mines. Switzer died on March 5, 1913, and the mines immediately closed, never to reopen. Refreshments will follow the program. For more information, call 315-866-6413.
