Senator Griffo is co-sponsoring legislation that would let you walk down Varick Street with your beer on St. Patrick’s Day.
The legislation would enable municipalities like the City of Utica to establish “recreation districts” where patrons would be allowed to leave a bar with their drinks and walk freely around the designated geographic area. If this law is approved, an open-container policy could be used on a limited basis during festivals or local events like Saranac Thursdays at the F.X. Matt Brewery. Alternatively, a municipality could choose to allow open-containers within this designated district all year round.
